Transformed by Failure

Dear Friends,

As we begin our Novena, one of the themes that already speaks deeply to my heart is the reflection on the fourth day: “Solanus the Humble Servant: Transformed by Failure.” It continues to speak powerfully to the reality of our lives today. Society often measures a person’s worth by accomplishments, titles, wealth, or popularity. We are often taught that happiness comes from winning, advancing, and being admired by others. When things do not go according to our plans, we can easily feel discouraged, forgotten, or even defeated.

Yet God sees things differently! When we look at Sacred Scripture, we discover that many of God’s greatest servants appeared unsuccessful in the eyes of the world. Moses struggled with his speech. David was the forgotten shepherd boy. Peter denied Jesus. Paul persecuted the Church. Their weaknesses and failures did not prevent God from accomplishing great things through them.

The life of Blessed Solanus invites us to see things through God’s eyes. One of the most remarkable aspects of Solanus’ life is that he never seemed concerned about becoming important. While others sought positions of influence, he was content to serve wherever he was needed. For many years he sat at the monastery door, welcoming visitors, listening to their struggles, praying with them, and offering words of encouragement. To the world, it may have seemed like a small and insignificant task, but in God’s plan, that humble ministry became the very place where countless lives were touched and transformed.

How often do we experience moments when our plans fail, our efforts go unnoticed, or our dreams take a different direction? We may wonder why God is not opening the doors we expected. Blessed Solanus teaches us that God’s blessings are not always found in the places we choose. Sometimes they are found in the places we never intended to be.

What appeared ordinary in Solanus’ life became extraordinary because he allowed God to work through it. His greatness was not found in what he accomplished but in how completely he trusted God’s providence. Perhaps there are disappointments in your own life—relationships that did not work out, opportunities that were lost, prayers that seem unanswered, or paths that have taken unexpected turns. Blessed Solanus reminds us that God can bring grace from every setback and purpose from every disappointment. The question is not, “Why did this happen to me?” but rather, “Lord, what are You inviting me to become through this?”

May we learn from Blessed Solanus that God’s plan is often greater than our plans, and His vision reaches far beyond our disappointments. When we place our lives in His hands, even our failures can become pathways to holiness and blessings for others. As Solanus often reminded people, “God is so good. He is always looking after us.” May Blessed Solanus Casey help us trust God’s providence, especially when we cannot yet understand His plan.
