Father Solanus Guild Reflection by Br. Daniel Victor, OFM Cap. – July 9, 2025

Rejoice and Be Glad: Yours is the Kingdom of God

With the arrival of July, we joyfully prepare to commemorate the feast of Blessed Solanus Casey, a simple Capuchin friar whose life still inspires countless hearts worldwide, particularly here in Detroit, where he lived and served with profound love. This year, for our days of reflection in the novena leading up to the feast day, we have chosen the Beatitudes from the Gospel of Matthew (Mt 5:1–12) as our spiritual theme. The Beatitudes are more than poetic blessings spoken by Jesus. They are a blueprint for Christian living. When we look at Blessed Solanus’ life, we find someone who lived these words not only in his prayers but in every encounter, every sacrifice, and every quiet act of love.

Let us reflect on how each of the Beatitudes comes to life through the example of this simple and holy friar:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
Solanus lived in humble obedience, accepting his limited priestly faculties with grace and serving joyfully as the monastery porter, showing us that true spiritual wealth lies in trust in God.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”
He drew near to those who mourned, offering comfort and prayer with deep compassion.

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”
He reflected the strength of a soul rooted in God’s will in his meekness, gentleness, and kindness, and he never sought recognition.

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.”
Solanus hungered for God’s righteousness, especially for the poor and the sick, trusting deeply in God’s providence and encouraging others to “Thank God ahead of time.”

“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.”
He was merciful, welcoming everyone with patience and love, never judging but always listening.

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”
His pure heart, centered on God through the Eucharist and prayer, allowed others to see the tenderness of God in him.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.”
As a peacemaker, Solanus sowed peace through simple, faithful gestures, a kind word, a silent prayer, and a smile.

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
Solanus was never bitter about being misunderstood or limited in his ministry. Instead, he saw his suffering as a way to be united with Christ. He offered it all for the good of souls, bearing trials with trust and humility.

As we reflect on the Beatitudes during this novena, may the life of Blessed Solanus Casey challenge and encourage us. He shows us that holiness is not about being perfect but about being faithful. He teaches us that we can live the Gospel through humility, kindness, trust and love, even daily. Let us ask for his intercession during these novena days and strive to become like him, bearers of hope and healing in a world that longs for the presence of God.

Blessed Solanus Casey, pray for us.

“Thank God ahead of time.”
