The Importance of Blessed Solanus Casey in 2024
Blessed Solanus Casey
Father Solanus Guild Reflection by Br. David Preuss, OFM Cap. – November 7, 2024
The work of Solanus Guild members in promoting knowledge of, and devotion to, Solanus Casey is much more than a nostalgic retelling of old stories; the work of the guild is ultimately to bring people to embrace the salvific work of Jesus Christ. We live in an increasingly secularized society. (In my family, 95% of my aunts and uncles were Catholic Church active, but the family members in the 20 to 30-year-old range have less than half who regularly attend any kind of religious service.) Are we Catholics dinosaurs headed for extinction? No, but being of Polish, Italian or Irish heritage is no longer a guarantee of being an active Catholic.
At the Solanus Casey Center, we see a number of teens, young adults and young families who are disciples of Christ. They are young people who have encountered Jesus and who have embraced the gospel message. There are also those who are still searching to find their religious beliefs and values. They are people who had others share faith with them while they were in the process of discerning what they personally believe in. Many young people desire to find the sacred in the midst of a world that has become cold and violent.
How does our dear Blessed Solanus Casey fit into this quest? He was a man of complete personal integrity who gave us a practical example of Christian living. He showed us through his daily work as a receptionist (porter) how to live as a follower of Christ. While at the door, he greeted with respect; he listened intently to them; he prayed with and for them; he asked them “what can I do for you?” Those four things are things that any of us can do irrespective of status of life or age. There are many great saints out there who are admirable, but who did things that we could never do. Solanus, however, demonstrates a kindness that we all can imitate. His is a life that is attractive for everyone from the most pious to those who have no contact with organized religion. He gives an example to how we can become a truly loving and compassionate human being. His love was empowered by his faith and closeness to God.
