New Solanus Casey Documentary to premiere July 28
Blessed Solanus Casey
Blessed Solanus Casey may not have excelled in many worldly talents, including his hobbies of singing and playing the violin, but his simple, humble life left an extraordinary legacy. Hundreds have shared stories of how this unassuming man profoundly impacted their lives. The Augustine Institute, in partnership with Digital Continent, presents a short documentary titled “The Violinist: Stories of Solanus Casey.” This inspiring film premieres on July 28 in Detroit, with free showings hosted by the Solanus Casey Center and Capuchin Franciscan Province of St. Joseph.
“The life of Fr. Solanus is simple yet profoundly inspiring,” said Emily Mentock, executive producer of “The Violinist” and co-founder of Digital Continent. “Our research and filming unveiled countless stories of Father Solanus’ deep love and friendship with God and unwavering service to others. He offers valuable lessons for our modern world.”
The documentary features the personal accounts of three individuals who knew Fr. Solanus: his grandniece, a Capuchin friar who lived with him at St. Bonaventure Monastery, and an Irish immigrant who frequently organized visits to him. Through captivating illustrations, photography, video, and immersive storytelling, the film brings Father Solanus Casey’s life and virtues to light, emphasizing the art of listening, readiness to help others, and gratitude.
“We want everyone to experience Fr. Solanus’ gentle holiness and consider how they, too, can live a holy life in their daily interactions,” Mentock added. “Fr. Solanus teaches us that sainthood is accessible to everyone. We are thrilled to debut this film just in time to celebrate Fr. Solanus’s Feast Day on July 30.”
The film will have a public premiere on July 28, 2024, when “The Violinist: Stories of Solanus Casey” will open to the public at the Solanus Casey Center, adjacent to St. Bonaventure Monastery, where Father Solanus spent much of his life and where his body rests. The Center features a permanent exhibit of artifacts and biographical information about his life. A special free showing will take place at 10:00 A.M. with coffee and donuts to follow. Additional screenings will take place throughout the day at 11:00 a.m., 12:00 noon, 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
“The Violinist: Stories of Solanus Casey” is part of the “Based on a True Saint” documentary series and will be exclusively available on Formed, the Augustine Institute’s on-demand streaming platform.
