The Word of God: The Heart of Franciscan Life

October is a special month for Franciscans, and this year is especially meaningful as we continue to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the Transitus of St. Francis of Assisi. As Capuchin Franciscans, we are invited to return to the very heart of our vocation: to live the Holy Gospel simply, humbly, and faithfully.

In his Testament, St. Francis says: “The Most High Himself revealed to me that I should live according to the form of the Holy Gospel.” For Francis, the Gospel was not merely something to read or discuss. It was a way of life. He desired to follow Christ with his whole life—in poverty, humility, obedience, charity, and love.

This same spirit can be seen beautifully in the life of Blessed Solanus Casey. Solanus lived the Gospel through simplicity and humility. He welcomed the sick and the poor, listened to those who were suffering, prayed with them, and trusted completely in God’s providence. He did not seek greatness or recognition. He simply desired to serve God and His people.

St. Francis and Blessed Solanus remind us that holiness is often found in simple things: serving another person, listening to someone who is hurting, accepting God’s will, remaining humble, and seeing Christ in the poor and suffering.

The Gospel must move from our ears to our hearts, and from our hearts to our lives.

As we celebrate St. Francis, may we ask ourselves: Am I truly living the Gospel, or am I only speaking about it?May we have the humility of Francis and Solanus to become instruments of God’s love wherever we are.

May St. Francis of Assisi and Blessed Solanus Casey intercede for us and help us to live the Gospel with simplicity, humility, and love.
